The King's School Sports Centre,
NSW
return to project list
The building was completed over a 12 month construction programme and was built within an existing environment that was operational for 40 weeks during construction.
The ornately designed facility includes extensive architectural detailing including a sandstone entry loggia, terracotta clad colonnades to external public access areas that had to be imported from England, as wella complicated roof line that melds perfectly into the surrounding environment. Also designed into the finished product were areas of exposed off-form concrete, a timber sports floor, high level glazing to the roof, timbered tiered seating and operable louvers for natural ventilation.
This purpose built school facility houses three full size basketball courts that can be also used as a single sporting area or even exam or function hall. Also included is a gymnasium, associated change rooms, a function centre, faculty offices and several change rooms.
The Buildcorp team successfully overcame many challenges on this project that included extremely restricted access to the site for materials handling and deliveries, the coordination of several specialist contractors into a relatively short programme and the procurement of many specialist materials not available in Australia. These constraints were largely overcome by adopting a philosophy into the team that whilst working on the project, they were in fact a part of the wider school community.
Specialised design components included exposed off-form concrete, terracotta column cladding imported from England, sandstone cladding and paving, timber sports floor, high level glazing to the roof, timbered tiered seating and operable louvers for natural ventilation.
Finally the facility was required to be constructed to an international Olympic rating which required the Buildcorp team to work closely with the design team and stakeholders to ensure these measures were achieved.
