A testament to what can be achieved through embracing a collaborative working relationship, Buildcorp successfully delivered the SAH Masterplan Redevelopment Stage 1 works in a fully operational hospital, with no major impacts to operations.

Buildcorp was engaged as the Managing Contractor for the Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH) master plan redevelopment Stage 1 works. This $225m redevelopment represented one of the biggest changes in the hospital’s 100+ year history and involved delivery across multiple workfaces within the live operational hospital.

Both upgrading and expanding the hospital’s facilities, this project delivered upgrades across eight floors of the clinical services building, a new comprehensive cancer centre, operating theatres and 180 beds, a car park for 1,000 vehicles which was integrated into the main hospital lobby, an education centre, and upgrades to hospital infrastructure.

All of these works had to be delivered while upholding the standard of care that the SAH is renowned for and maintaining a functional working environment for the 2,300 staff, 500 volunteers and 750 medical practitioners.

To ensure the hospital’s operational requirements were understood and future works clearly communicated, Buildcorp established the SAN alliance – a project working group with key stakeholders from each hospital department. Meeting monthly and updating fortnightly, this working group ensured the staff of the hospital had a voice throughout the works, and that there was always an open communication channel.

With an evolving design that was being changed well into construction, the team retrospectively designed fit-outs via 3D technology to satisfy design and as built requirements and incorporate last minute changes with little to no cost or time implications. Throughout the project, the team worked with the hospital to deliver tangible efficiencies both through construction and for the life of the asset including a million dollar saving through the facade design and centralised plant which provides the hospital with energy savings to this day.

In addition, the team developed and implemented a comprehensive traffic management strategy to segment construction, hospital deliveries and emergency services. A three-gate system was utilised to ensure ambulatory access was never compromised, and construction and medical deliveries were clearly separated.

Understanding that the sooner the hospital could utilise the facilities, the better, the Buildcorp team implemented a staged handover strategy which enabled portions of the hospital to be handed over early for operational commencement.

This project involved delivering across multiple workfaces within a live hospital and added 29,500m2 of hospital floor space. The project included:

  • A twelve-storey clinical services building including a comprehensive cancer centre, eight operating theatres and 180 beds
  • A five storey multi-deck car park for 1,000 vehicles
  • Entry building providing connectivity between the multi deck car park and main hospital lobby
  • Infrastructure amplification and upgrade across all critical services
  • Education centre
  • Extensive road reconfiguration and temporary car parking solution

Testimonials

And can I say as I was looking at the briefing notes for today’s event, looking at all the things you were able to achieve, 12 new operating theatres, 200 new beds, additional car parking for something like 1,200 cars, all for $200 million? Extraordinary, extraordinary… $200 million of outstanding value.
